Herbalism is one of the three gathering professions a player can choose in the World of Warcraft. This profession basically only involves the gathering of Herbs. You will be able to gather lower level herbs once you take up the Profession. You can learn the profession from a Herbalism trainer in one of the major cities. At some point you will have to gather higher level herbs in order to get skill points for it. Most herbs require a specific Herbalism skill to be picked up. There are different kinds of herbs, some are common while others are rare. If you gather some herbs you will sometimes receive some bonus material like essences of life, etc. which are also worth something.

What to do with your Herbalism profession?

First of all you get a healing spell when you take up the Herbalism spell. Even though this spell, called lifeblood, isn’t really powerful at later levels, it is very handy while leveling. It can only be cast on yourself.

The Herbs you find can be used for various purposes. First of all you can sell them at the Auction House for good amounts of gold. There are other professions that require a lot of herbs namely Alchemy and Inscription. That’s why many people are willing to buy Herbs from the Auction House.

What you of course can do is take up Skinning next to your Herbalism profession. With both these gathering professions you can really make loads of gold.

A more fun thing to do however, is taking up a crafting profession like Alchemy or Inscriptions. For both of these professions you will need hundreds if not thousands of Herbs. With the Alchemy profession you need the Herbs that you gather in order to make useful potions, elixirs and Flasks. You will need Herbs for the Inscription profession as well in order to make special inks, inks you can use to write on parchments in order to make scrolls and glyphs among others.

There are no requirements for the Herbalism profession. There are however some things that can make your life easier. To begin with you should use the Herb tracking skill so you can see the Herbs on your minimap. They are displayed as small yellow circles. Then there is an addon called Gatherer which you can download and add to your Interface/addon folder. This addon memorizes all the herbs that you and others in your guild or party find. This means that you will know where to look and it saves you a lot of time searching for particular Herbs. With this addon you will definitely earn more gold per hour.

You can also consider donating some Herbs to your guild bank. Especially if you are in a raiding guild, where potions and flasks play an important role in the raids, it would be a nice thing to do. You will not only be able to make a lot of gold, but you can help out your guild as well.
