WoW Blacksmith Guide
Blacksmithing – From Mail and Plate to Weapons and other useful Items

Blacksmithing is one of the eleven professions you can choose from for your character.  Blacksmithing consists of forging different items out of metals and minerals to make your items. By using the different metals that have been smelted by miners blacksmiths are able to construct different armors and weapons amongst other things. Blacksmithing is also great because it allows for the player to create sellable items that you can make a profit with and that will benefit other players.

Blacksmithing however, is not a cheap profession to level up if you do not have the resources which are needed. The resources that you will mainly need are different kinds of metals in the form of bars. You have several options to obtain these materials; You can either get the materials from another character, buy them from the Auction House, or level up the Mining Profession and gather the ores by mining them yourself. If you don’t have another character and don’t want to spend literally thousands of gold on the Auction House in order to buy these items, mining is then what you will need. The most commonly seen combination of professions with Blacksmithing is therefore Mining. There are many WoW Blacksmith Guides that back up my opinion because you will basically be saving gold to level these two professions up together. In order to craft something with your Blacksmithing profession, you will have to buy a Blacksmith Hammer for about 50 copper. You need to carry this around in your inventory so that you will always be able to train your professions. You can only craft items with your Blacksmithing profesions in the proximity of a ‘furnace’ because you will need to melt the ores etc. which makes sense. You can find these in all the bigger and even in most of the smaller villages though, so it's not really a problem.

You can learn the Blacksmithing profession from the Blacksmith trainers in each of the major cities. You can just ask a guard for directions if you can’t find them. For a small amount of money you will be able to become an apprentice blacksmith. In time, and after creating several goods, you will be able to gain higher ranks of Blacksmithing and learn better blacksmithing plans from the same trainer. It is also advised to visit your Blacksmith trainer frequently because they will have something new to teach you after every 5th skill point.

There are also other ways to get the plans for your blacksmithing though. Some of the blacksmithing plans are random drops that can be found all over Azeroth while others will require that you kill particular bosses at higher levels. You will also be able to find some plans on the Auction House every now and then.

Ok, but is Blacksmithing good for everybody? You might be asking if your considering this profession. And to be honest, no. The typical WoW Blacksmith Guide will tell you the same things that I'm about to tell you.

Because you will mainly be making plate armor with the Blacksmithing profession it is advised that only the players that actually wear plate choose this profession. Even though weapons can be made, which can be used by any class, it is still not in the best interest of these classes to become a Blacksmith. There are other handy items you can make though, that should be mentioned. Think in example about the Belt Buckle at later levels. This item can be used in your current belt and you will then be able to place a gem in it. Basically every end game player will need this. Think about the different Enchanting Rods that can be made also, which can be sold to Enchanters which need these to level up their profession etc. Once you reach skill level 400, you will also be able to place a socket in your Wrist and Gloves, these are only for your own use however.

Basically you can say that even though it has some advantages for everybody, the blacksmithing profession is best for Paladins, Death Knights and Warriors because they will benefit most from all of the above mentioned. Other classes could probably choose another profession because these as well have a lot of advantages.
